Savage

Savage was actually my first script, begun in 1987. I asked myself: What if Travis Bickle were a hit man for the mob? When I set pen to paper – I actually used a pen and paper since I didn’t know how to type – Charlie, the lead, emerged as a lonely kid more like the sort that might shoot up a high school than like Robert DeNiro’s fierce Vietnam veteran.

The original title (scrapped when Hollywood used it) was Blood Brothers. Though it is Charlie’s story, he is a passive hero for much of it. He acts at the direction of Nick, the would-be crime boss who befriends him. It is an anti-buddy story, as Nick is compelled by his own warped nature to betray anyone close to him.

Savage enjoyed a staged reading in Los Angeles, but has never been filmed.
